In a world filled with people always in a hurry, it can be hard to find the time to relax because there just never seems to be enough time.
However, there are some quick and simple ways to unwind through all the chaos.
One of the few, and easiest, ways to relax is to take a couple of deep breaths and focus on it while doing so. Most people take one deep breath and sigh without really noticing that their body is trying to relax for them. If they paused for less than five minutes and took at least three deep breaths it would help so much. First, inhaling through the nose then exhaling through the mouth slowly. Simply doing that can bring the mind a little peace and make it easier to focus on whatever task is at hand.
Another easy way to relax is to set down the phone. Unplug from the digital world for a little bit. People who work at a computer for eight hours can simply leave their cell phone in a purse or at their desk during their lunch break. People, regardless if they work with technology, always seem to have their faces in the smart phones. Leave a non-emergent text message go unanswered for an hour or so. Stay off social media for a day. Set a time to respond to emails and then, if it isn’t urgent, leave it until the next day.
At the end of a long day, a warm bath or hot shower can be an easy way to relax and be clean. In a shower, let the hot water hit the muscles in the shoulder blades. In a bath, add some bubbles, Epsom salts with essential oils, or a bath bomb for extra relaxation.
There is also the option of socializing if it doesn’t cause more stress or anxiety. Sitting down with a friend for a chat can help a person to relax more than they realize. They can get some of the issues that are bothering them off their chest. They could have a conversation about a recent event, good or bad. Sometimes it’s just nice to talk to someone else.
One of the things that many people neglect is exercise. Exercising releases chemicals in the brain called endorphins. Those endorphins are the “feel good” hormones naturally produced by the body. While most people claim they don’t have time for exercise, they are thinking of going to the gym and heavy exercise. Take a walk to the break room. Do some jumping jacks.
Kick your legs fast in your chair. Move your arms in big circles or small ones or both. It doesn’t need to be vigorous exercise to get those hormones flowing.
Something as simple as lighting a fragrant candle or turning on an oil diffuser can be relaxing. There’s the saying “take time to smell the roses” and it’s one to keep in mind. Stopping a busy day for just a moment to take a breath of fresh air can be incredibly relaxing. Having house plants and/or flowers can help create a relaxing environment. Going outside for a few minutes a day has benefits for health and relaxation.
It is important to remember that you are important. Taking time to relax is necessary. It’s okay to tell others ‘’no’’ from time to time so that you have time to care for yourself.
There can be calm in all the chaos, if a little time is taken to relax.
